Why should we be beggars with a ballot in our hand?
Because we need more transparency on land ownership not less. The land registry belongs to all of us and will aid greater transparency.
The Land Registry performs valuable public services and is independent of shareholders or vested interests. As citizens we need to have that confidence in its independence, as it is dealing with our property, which for most of us is our only significant asset.
It also brings money into the Exchequer, and provides good employment prospects, especially for young graduates in a time where meaningful graduate employment is scarce. There is no reason to privatise this successful public service. I urge the Government to think again and remove the Land Registry from any privatisation proposals.
