Wales is set to shortly produce its next Open Government Action Plan for the period 2018-20, as part of the Open Government initiative. As the Open Government Network in Wales we have called for more engaging communications and innovative opportunities for citizens to actively participate in decision making in an open and transparent way.

At the centre of our asks for the Open Government Action Plan, is the introduction of Participatory Budgeting. Participatory Budgeting provides an excellent opportunity to achieve all of these aims alongside meeting the goals of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act. Encouraging active involvement and collaboration as part of the decision making process along with consideration for long-term, preventative measures that is vital to improving the economic, social, environmental and cultural well-being of Wales.

Focus of the webinar: to explore the opportunities, challenges and lessons learnt in using participatory budgeting and to empower local people to achieve positive change.

Speakers:

  • José Manuel Ribeiro – Mayor, Government of Valongo Municipality
  • Alan Budge – Consultant, PB partners
  • Noeleen Diver – Triangle Housing / Karin Eyben Harper’s Hill Project
  • Emma Smith – Head of Budget Delivery, Welsh Government

This will be followed with an open discussion and a Q + A session facilitated by Jess Blair, Director from the Electoral Reform Society.
